I felt her arms around my back and her young body pushed against mine as she snuggled close.
"Happy Birthday Susie," was all I could say.
Inside I felt the warmth coming from having made her happy. I pushed the kiss to the back of my mind, it was nothing more than an outpouring of emotion and, nice that it was, it should never have happened. It was dark by now, and I suggested that we headed back to the hotel. I had to carry her over the sand once more, and this time she clung on tight, her arms wrapped around my torso and her head snuggled up against my shoulder. I carried her further than I probably should have done, dropping her down on the path only when other guests came into sight. Together, brother and sister hand in hand, we walked back to our rooms.
I wished Susie goodnight and then watched as she entered her room. As her door closed, I opened mine and went inside. My mind was awash with emotions. It had been a funny few days. I'd done it all; found a potential soulmate, run off leaving her in the lurch, reacquainted myself and then ended up being kissed by my sister. Just as I contemplated the goings on of the last few days, there was a knock at the door. I opened it and there, standing in nothing more than an extra long tee-shirt, was my sister.
"Are you alright, Susie?" I asked, suddenly a little worried.
She smiled.
"Do you think I could stay with you tonight?" came the most unexpected question.
"What?" I responded.
"Tonight is my birthday. I thought it would be nice to stay with you rather than being all alone."
"But, you're my sister," I retorted.
"And you're the best brother a sister could ever have. Can I, Danny? All I want is to not be on my own on my birthday."
What could I say? I did love Susie; no, not in that way. I guessed it was innocent enough. I'd stayed at hers after that fateful party and nothing untoward happened. All she wanted was a little company on her birthday.
"I guess so," I responded, "but, you have to understand, what we did back there . . . the kiss . . . well, it shouldn't have happened."
"I know," came a rather apologetic reply, "but I just wanted to show you how much tonight meant. I promise it won't happen again."
I never saw her fingers crossed behind her back, as she followed me into my room.

Some like a quick jerk, others (I will refrain from references to more evolved intellect here) enjoy more the buildup.
You're the creator, and if a reader is looking for one or the other, they can either enjoy your work or move on. Otherwise, we (as authors) will be apologizing for everything we write. I don't have time for that.
I liked this one; I haven't read others of yours, yet. I found a few awkward moments, but not enough to put me off. I am looking forward to the next installment and the happenings that Susie has planned and required the secret crossing of her fingers.
