Four Blessings

The Blessings, as they are known, reveal themselves on one's 18th name day under the eye of the moon. There are no written histories, to my knowledge, that explain why only human children are given the Blessings. Some say it is the gods that bestow powers on humans so that they can survive or compete with the demis of our world.That however is only speculation. A Preface to Blessings

999 AC, Year of the Beast

Chapter 1

Benek Village, bordering the Heritage Mountain Range

1017 AC, Year of the Demon

Aiden sat submerged in the river near his family's farm, he'd already cleaned off his body and hair from the day's work and was loathed to step out onto the bank. Spring had arrived but the winds rolling off the Western Mountains still carried the winter bite. He knew his mother would be looking for him soon or be sending his twin sister to come get him, he sank back down into the water forcing them from his lungs and sinking to the bottom. He enjoyed the seclusion this act brought him and the near silence. He pulled at his slight weight lazily as he sat there. Eventually he came up for air and started inching his way out of the water onto the rocky bank.

His clothes hung from a rope between two trees near the shore, as he began to walk towards them he felt like someone was watching him. He turned around and searched the other bank, there was definitely something in the woods on that side of the river, he could barely pick it out as it flitted between the trees. He twisted around as he heard footsteps behind him and an easy laugh. Will Stecher and his brothers came out of the trees with unwelcome smiles. Aiden grimaced and reached for his pants. Will smacked his hand out of the way and started grabbing each of his garments.

"Will please, I am not looking to fight you today, I need to get back home. It's my Blessings Day, my mother and sister will be waiting for me." Aiden begged

"I know it's your Blessing day mud rat, that's why we came out here! We just want to give you a few gifts, ya' know one for each blessing!" Will said as he handed my clothes to his brother Vincent.

Aiden's eyes shifted between each Stecher brother; Will had a large frame, well muscled and tall. Will was Aiden's complete opposite in most ways. His younger brothers Vincent and Hursch were even bigger but not nearly as smart or cruel. Unfortunately they followed Will around like puppies and did their best to emulate him. Will's Blessings,the four marks, shown darkly on the inside of his right forearm, they started from the inside of his elbow and ran down to the wrist. Spearmen, Strength, Speed, and Warrior were all gifted to Will and both his brothers. They were not uncommon Blessings especially for soldiers and guardsmen. He knew they would be leaving to join the Bailona Legions this spring once the snow melted and the passes became open again. For Aiden that day could not come sooner.

He watched as Vincent strode to the river and threw his clothes into the river. "Will please!" Aiden pleaded "I just want to go home, I'm not looking for trouble."

Will watched as Aiden shivered in the cold his hands cupping his privates. "Aiden, you know I hate it when you whine like that. Your sister isn't half as wimpy as you, you sure you both aren't girls? Why don't you prove it to us?"

"Fuck you Will..." said Aiden staring at the ground.

"No reason to talk to your buddies like that." Will responded with a sneer.

Will reached for his left arm and Aiden smacked his hand away and tried to dodge around him. Vincent and Hursch both lunged, grabbed a shoulder and wrist and restrained Aiden, forcing him to his knees. Will laughed and slid a boot underneath Aiden's small shriveled penis and balls, even smaller than usual due to the cold . "Well isn't that precious, you are a man!" Will said

Aiden started to yell for help when Will hit him in the stomach stealing his breath. "There's your first Blessing bitch, and I got your next one right here." Will started to unbuckle his pants. Aiden couldn't think, blood was rushing to his head and he was gasping for air. Aiden looked up to see Will's flaccid cock fall from his small clothes, thick black hair covered his balls and pubic area. Aiden felt like he could smell it from where he kneeled and almost gagged. Then Will hit Aiden three more times in the gut, he felt Vincent and Hursch let go of him and he hit the rocky shore, head bouncing off the rocks. As he listened to their retreating footsteps Aiden curled up into a ball and tried to wish the pain away. The area around his temple felt bruised. He shivered from the cold, taking gulping breaths, naked on the river bank. He inwardly seethed, hoping his Blessings brought him some way to defend himself in the future. Aiden suffered quietly until he felt a warm hand on his shoulder and his sister's voice in his ear. "Stecher brothers?" Alexa asked

Aiden nodded.

"Will is a real piece of shit, I denied his advances again today...I-I'm sorry that he takes it out on you. At least he is leaving tomorrow. Otherwise I think we should involve Elder Silvia at this point." Said Alexa "Where are your clothes?"

Aiden finally looked up into his sister's face. Large hazel colored eyes, pouty pink lips, and a small nose speckled with freckles mirrored his own. Straight black hair framed their faces and ran down to their shoulders. Alexa smiled showing off her dimples, she reached her hands under his armpits and pulled him to his feet. The only differences between the twins was their physical stature. Alexa was tall with lean muscle that was a product of her years spent hunting in the woods and wielding her bow. Aiden stood a few inches shorter and was slender, he looked to be devoid of muscle. Alexa looked him up and down grinning inwardly wondering again if there was an accident at birth and they had switched sexes. His hips flared out and his figure was feminie, and while he lacked tits and the rest of the assorted parts she couldn't help but be a little jealous at times of his physique.

Aiden, embarrassed at his nudity, covered his privates and jerked his head towards the river. "They threw them in the river and hit me in the stomach a few times. Nothing they haven't done before." Purposefully not telling her what else they were going to do.

Alexa removed her black cloak and draped it over Aiden's shoulders, she rested a hand on his back as they started towards the farm and home. "Well let's get you home and dressed, we don't have long until sunset." Alexa said eyeing his temple, "Looks like you got a little goose egg too. Damn those fucking Stechers." Aiden just nodded his head lost in his thoughts, he was starting to worry again about his Blessings. He had tried not to think about them all day. For most of his life he worked alongside his mother, taking care of the animals and beasts while also learning how to sew, cook, and garden. While it wasn't unwelcome work he also wanted some adventure and to meet strange new people. He also knew his sister wouldn't be able to help him either, Alexa was set to leave for Fort Blackwood in a week to start her ranger apprenticeship with their uncle. Everyone seemed to think Alexa getting Ranger based Blessings to be a foregone conclusion.

Deep in thought Aiden was surprised when he looked up and saw his mother standing in the doorway to their home. A worried frown stole over her beautiful face before she smiled and beckoned them inside, the twins looked very much like their mother Aiden taking after her even more so. He hugged his mother, gave her a sad smile and left for his room as Alexa started to explain what happened.

Chapter 2

Aiden dressed in his small clothes, leather pants, and his white long sleeve blouse his mother had left out for him. Tying his brown work boots on he stood up. He walked into his mother's room and stood in front of her mirror. His temple looked a little bruised but the swelling didn't look too bad and was covered up by his long hair. He stared at himself and for a moment as he felt resentment bubble up at how he looked. Knowing he was not manly looking or what people would call handsome. Aiden was, for lack of a better word, pretty. Then he grimaced and shook his head, he was born this way and there was very little he could do about it. He hated the way those thoughts seeped into his mind and did his best to ignore them whenever they seemed to rise from the depths. With one last look in the mirror he strode out into the dining room where his mother and sister were.

Alexa and his mother both looked up at him and smiled, their hands resting on cups of tea, a third place sitting at the open seat. His mother looked him up and down and said, "Well it seems those Stecher boys could not leave soon enough. Are you hurt? Would you like to go see the medicant?"

"No mom." Smiling as he took a sip of his tea, the heat washing through his body. "A little more of this tea then we can leave for the Blessing square." He said sitting down, "Please don't say anything to the Elder, Will leaves tomorrow and I don't want to make any more trouble. Hopefully we won't have to see them ever again."

"No promises on speaking with the Elder." said his mother a crooked smile coming over her lips "If Will keeps pestering Alexa and bullying you I will be forced. He won't do anything tonight and should leave in the morning with the Boayer boys on their way to the capitol. As long as the gods will it." frowning and shrugging her shoulders she stood up and looked to the twins. "Come then finish your tea. It's time to receive your Blessings. The sun sets in less than an hour."

The twins and their mother walked down the path towards the village and Aiden deep in thought again barely listened as his mother and Alexa talked. His mother's left arm wrapped around his waist, he found himself gazing at her own Blessings marked down her right forearm. Husbandry, Farming, Strength, and Growth. Growth was a relatively rare Blessing allowing her to increase yields with any plant or animal life she took care of. Mixed with Husbandry and Farming it allowed her to keep the farm and make a profit even after their father died. She often hired demi workers to help with the extra chores during planting and harvest. They were more expensive but generally worked faster.

Aiden had trouble recalling what his father looked liked or even who he was, he had died in defense of the village when he was very young. His father's Blessings included, Hunter, Tracker, Woodsmen, and Builder according to his mother. He was an expert Ranger and it was obvious that Alexa took after him in those respects.

The glow of lanterns came into view as they approached the village, they could hear loud voices and someone playing a lute. Cooking fires and the smell of roasted meats and spices pervaded the air. Aiden and Alexa looked at each other and smiled. "Go on you two the celebrations are for you. Do not stand on ceremony; it's supposed to be fun. Go eat. Talk with your friends" said their mother pushing them towards the festivities.

As they both took off running, Elder Silvia spotted them waving to the twins she started striding towards their mother. "Taya it's good to see you love! Are your children prepared for the Blessing?" the Elder had a broad grin on her face as she hugged their mother, "Think we can squirrel away for a few minutes and-"

The rest of the conversation was lost to Aiden and Alexa as they sprinted towards the square where the sounds of laughing and music were loudest.

As the sun set and the moon rose, the village started to congregate around the Blessing square. At the center of the square sat a plain stone building except for the intricate carvings on the roof. Elder Silvia stood in front of the stone building as the villagers gathered. She was quite beautiful, a widow like his mother, she had bright red hair, light green eyes, and a heart shaped face. She had a curvy figure and seemed to exude a motherly air. Confident in her position as village Elder. She was the same age as his mother, despite her young age the villagers trusted her and she had proven herself a good leader. She held up his hand and waited for everyone to grow quiet then he started speaking.

"Today we are here to celebrate two young lives that will receive their Blessings tonight, in many ways it will shape their future. Alexa Tellan, Aiden Tellan please come forward." gesturing at the twins, they walked forward. "I have known both Alexa and Aiden their whole lives and it has been a privilege to watch the scions of Taya and Alec Tallan grow in this village. Alec would be proud of his legacy, his children are kind, hardworking, and I am sure they will bring even more recognition to the Tellan name"

Cheers went up at that. Elder Silvia turned to Alexa and gestured towards the stone building. Alexa nodded looking nervous she entered the building, she gave Aiden a fleeting smile and then walked in. The Elder turned to Aiden, "We will both now enter, you will wait in the entryway, to the Blessing Hall. Once you're sister has received her Blessings I will send for you."

Elder Silvia did not wait for affirmation and strode into the stone building. Once inside Aiden saw a thick wooden door, Elder Silvia entered and closed the door. Looking around and seeing a stone bench he settled in to wait. The Blessing did not usually take long but Aiden was anxious and stood up to start pacing darting furtive glances towards the door.

What felt like 20 minutes later the door opened and Alexa stepped out, she met his gaze and smiled lifting her right arm. Four symbols were inked there and he recognized two of them, Aiden glanced at Alexa questioningly, "I know the Hunter and Woodsmen, but what are the other two?"

Alexa's smile widened as she indicated the third symbol, a Blackwood tree circled by a crescent moon. "This one is Treerunner, it allows me to flit through the forest quickly and with practice should be able to use branches and trunks to move faster. Elder could not tell me much about it. Shadowstep is a passive ability that allows me to remain remain silent regardless of my terrain. Perfect for a Ranger." Alexa grinned mirroring Aiden's.

"You should get in there brother, you don't have all night. I'm sure you'll be fine." she reassured him. Hugging Aiden quickly before taking her seat on the stone bench.

Aiden grabbed the door handle, without looking back, he entered and looked around the bright stone room. Moonlight shone through the open ceiling in the center. The patterns around the ceiling and roof allowed the moon to create interesting shadows all over the walls and floor. When he studied the shadows closer he realized they were symbols of Blessings, hundreds of them. As his gaze drifted to the center of the building he saw a small stone podium around knee height. Sitting on the other side of it was Elder Silvia. "Welcome Aiden Tallen, please sit across from me and roll up your right sleeve."

Aiden doing as he was told sat across from the Elder and exposed his right forearm by rolling up his sleeve. Elder Silvia gestured at the podium and Aiden set his arm atop it, his forearm facing upward. Porcelain skin reflecting the moonlight just as brightly as the white stone around him. The Elder reached out and grasped his arm by the elbow and wrist, her calloused hands rasping against his smooth skin. She looked at him smiling and said, "Now normally symbols usually start to show under the five minutes once the moonlight hits your arm. So we can't sit here in happy silence while we wait or-" she cut off as an inky black spot started to form on Aiden's forearm, the first of four.

Raising her eyebrows at him she glanced at his forearm and her smile fell partially. The inky blackness of the symbol looked like it was being painted on by an invisible brush and hand. Aiden watched as a single six pointed star formed from the blackness, it almost looked like a portal to the night sky. 13 more stars started forming around the original, though these were only outlined in the black ink. He could see many more seemingly winking in the background of the symbol then disappear. "Grex," he heard the Elder whisper.

"What was that?" Aiden asked but the Elder ignored him, her eyebrows coming together staring at his forearm as a second symbol started to appear.

A bear's head started to form its maw open as if to roar, then a wolf's head started forming opposite snarling in turn. The Elder and Aiden shared a look. Aiden knew this one, socially it wasn't considered a curse but it was frowned at and those that had the Beast symbol were not trusted easily amongst humans.

The blacksmith Harold had this symbol and was well liked and trusted by the village, though he rarely used his connections to Beasts. He only used his gift when nearby Beasts were being territorial and aggressive. More rarely if an unknown were or beastkin traveled through their village. The beast races tended to react more comfortably around Harold.

Aiden's gut clenched as they watched the third symbol form, he did not know this one and knew for sure no one in his village had it. A winged creature formed with short horns and a spiked tale, Aiden had stopped breathing as slitted eyes took shape and small fangs seemed to jut from a short snout. "Daemon" Elder Silvia breathed out. She looked at Aiden as he stared at the supposed curse this world had put upon him. Though Aiden did not know it yet, it was likely he will not be welcomed by any villages, towns, or cities so long as they know he has the Blessing of Daemon. He could go to the demi nations, but that will not be safe for him either as a human. The world of Aseeia could be violent and she knew this would make it all the more so. As she thought on this she glanced down as the fourth and last Blessing began to form.

The inky symbol began to take shape, four crescent moons circling a full moon, the Blessing of Augmentation, an exceedingly rare skill. Elder Silvia inwardly grimaced as she could see how Augmentation could be used positively with Beast and maybe Grex but this skill with Daemon will scare people and they may even consider him extremely dangerous. Those caught consorting with wild Daemon species often had this Blessing, while not inherently evil it made it easier to use non humanoid Daemons to forge a path to power. Her thoughts were interrupted as Aiden broke her grip and was staring pointedly at the Daemon symbol.
